Vary Your HashTags To Extend Your Content Reach
Author: Alan Richardson
Vary your hashtags periodically.
If you keep using the same hashtags you might find that your reach growth stalls.
The same people are seeing your content and your follower base doesn’t expand. Rather than adding in another platform, we want to try and continue to grow on our existing platforms and Hashtag strategies can help with that.
A tactic I am experimenting with is:
- have a group of hashtags I use for a week
- then switch to a different set of hashtags in a similar area
This is easier for twitter where I use fewer hashtags.
I think this is much easier to do on Twitter when I am curating content and re-tweeting someone else’s article.
By identifying articles that are of interest to me, but outside of my main domain, I can then promote them to my audience with the highest performing hashtags for my niche. And add in hashtags that are outside my normal niche to increase the opportunity for a new audience to encounter my profile.
On instagram, since they allow 30 hashtags, I cannot apply this strategy yet as I need to do more hashtag research to identify more tags.
To Support This
Find ways of curating content that are related to, but essentially outside your niche:
Other people in your niche might not promote this content, thereby making your feed more unique.
You continue to learn. By drawing on lessons from other domains, you might develop techniques and tactics that your competitors do not know, or cannot draw upon, thereby giving you a competitive edge.
Use the usual tactics for this:
- Google Alerts
- Influencers who heavily engage in content curation from related niche
- Blog aggregators
As with all content curation, we want to try and let someone else do the heavy lifting for us.
